THE University of Venda has its first female chancellor in its 40-year history.
Advocate Mojankunyane Gumbi was inaugurated on Friday, 18 February at the university in Venda, Limpopo.
She took over the reins from former president Kgalema Motlanthe, who served two terms in the position.
Gumbi said her strategy was to make the university relevant.
“The university is committed to working with stakeholders to contribute to the well-being of the community, and to serve as an engine that drives regional growth and development strategy in Limpopo.
“A successful university model is one in which the academic programmes and research activities are in harmony with the developmental needs of the community,” she said.
Gumbi said she was looking forward to taking the university to greater heights.
Vice-Chancellor and Principal Dr Bernard Nthambeleni said it was an honour to have someone like Gumbi as the first ever female chancellor.
He acknowledged the government’s financial support that enabled expansion programmes like the construction of lecture halls, student residences and staff houses. But he said more funding was necessary for projects such as additional student housing.
