KZN Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs (EDTEA) MEC Ravi Pillay has resigned.
He tendered his resignation on Tuesday, 9 August.
In his letter he indicated that he’s resigning as a member of KZN legislature and consequently as a member of the executive committee.
The letter reads as follows: “I write this message on the eve of my departure as MEC for Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs in KwaZulu-Natal. In accordance with discussions with my political
party, I have resigned as a member of the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature and consequently as a member of the executive committee. This will be tabled at the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature sitting scheduled for Wednesday, 10 August 2022.”
“I wish to record my sincerest appreciation to each of you – head of department, senior management, all staff, entity board members and staff – for your support and contribution to strengthening EDTEA and its entities and giving effect to each respective mandate. EDTEA and its family of entities are critical to addressing the challenges of our time – poverty, unemployment, and inequality,” the letter continued.
“I pay tribute to all those who contributed to navigating and overcoming the challenges of the recent past – Covid-19, the July 2021 Unrest, and the 2022 floods. We have proved our resilience as a province and given real meaning to #KZNRISING. There is still much to be done,
and I have no doubt that you will be equal to the task. I wish the incoming political leadership the very best and know that you will continue to give full support to the new political leadership of the department.
“I once again thank each of you for your co-operation in an extraordinary period in the life of our province. May the Almighty grant you and your family rich blessings.”
Pillay’s resignation comes after Sihle Zikalala’s resignation. It is further speculated that more MECs will be resigning or reshuffled.
