MPUMALANGA Community Safety MEC Vusi Shongwe has issued a warning.

He said that troublesome kasis with the potential to destabilize peace and safety for everyone will not be tolerated during this Easter weekend.

He was speaking during the launch of the Easter Road safety campaign on the N4 road between Karino and Mbombela on Wednesday, 5 April.

Shongwe said the launch is to ensure that people are safe as much as possible.

"We will be all over the province making sure that all people are safe on our roads and in their communities. We will also focus more in the townships because people who live in townships have a tendency of saying they will only respect law enforcement officers in the main targeted roads in the province and towns.

"This time, we have agreed with security cluster heads that we will also visit townships and villages to enforce law and order," Shongwe said.

"The plans for this year's Easter long weekend are informed by the comprehensive historical information on crashes and fatalities during the Easter holidays between 2018 and 2022."

Shongwe said a 24-hour shift by traffic law enforcement officers will be implemented on six identified provincial priority routes from 6 to 11 April.

The MEC said these routes have previously contributed most crashes over the last five years during the Easter period.

He said law enforcement agencies will also keep on ports of entries, especially Lebombo and Oshoek border gates.

Other operations that will be put in place include alcohol operations, roadblocks, block patrols, and other road safety activations across the province.

"While plans are in place to curb road crashes, we are appealing to all road users to play their part by being cautious and be considerate when driving. We must prioritize our safety and that of other road users," said Shongwe.
