GAUTENG Education MEC Matome Chiloane is deeply saddened by a tragic incident that happened on Saturday, 20 January.

This comes after grade 7 pupil Latoya Temilton (13) from Laerskool Queenswood in Tshwane allegedly drowned during a school trip.

"According to information we have received, the school was on an authorised one-day excursion to Wag ‘n Bietjie Resort in Witkoppen, Olifantafontein. According to reports, the pupil unfortunately drowned during the excursion," he said.

The MEC said the police are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. Our district and the school have visited the learner’s family to express their condolences.

Chiloane has recommended that an independent investigation be conducted.

"The hiring of an independent law firm is already underway. The law firm will be introduced to the school management team and the student’s family once appointed. We are devastated by this tragic loss. We convey our sincere condolences to the bereaved family and the entire school community," Chiloane said.

He said it is hoped that an independent investigation into the incident will help clarify exactly what happened.

He said the school held a memorial service for the pupil on Wednesday, January 24 to remember and honour her life.
