DEVASTATED Education MEC Matome Chiloane, members of the Department of Education, the Community Policing Forum and scholar transport members visited Faranani Primary School to convey their condolences after the deadly incident.
They later proceeded to the Tshililo family to pay their respects and offer support to the bereaved family and send necessary support to assist the family.
This after Eugene Tshililo (34) of Protea Glen extension 2, Soweto, lost his life outside Faranani Primary School at about 2pm on Tuesday, 11 October when he tried to stop a hijacking.
As part of the interventions, according to Chiloane there will be the recruitment of 6 000 new police officers.
Of those officers, the department will request that schools should be guarded by some of these officers.
“We want police officers to be stationed at our schools in the morning and in the afternoon,” he said.
Addressing the school and the media, MEC Chiloane said that the incident that happened is one of those incidents that shows that as a country we have a long way to go.
He said that the department will also send assistance to the pupils and teachers.
“We have seen how criminals have become bold. We can’t hand over our community to criminals,” he added.
Ward councillor Phelelani Sindane said that crime has taken its toll in Protea Glen.
“On Saturday morning there was a body and again this morning before I came here, there was another body that was picked up in extension 26. We are pleading that we at least get another mobile police station,” he said.
According to a witness, the incident happened within the blink of an eye.
“I heard gunshots and when I looked around, I saw that a man had been shot. As I was looking around, those thugs saw me, I got into a car and drove away. They gave chase until I approached a garage where there were traffic cops,” she said.
According to another witness, the criminals are after Avanza vehicles.
