A house belonging to a village mashonisa, Portia Shuma, was set alight on Monday by a group of residents who accused her of knowing the whereabouts of a local man who went missing two weeks ago.

THE life story of a well-known village mashonisa has come to a sad and brutal end.

Portia Shuma (37) succumbed to her injuries after a crowd tied her up in Salema Village, outside Malamulele in Limpopo, on the Monday 11 April and dragged her behind a bakkie from village to village.

The gang also set her house alight and damaged her bakkie.

They accused her of knowing about the disappearance of a local man, who has been missing for two weeks.

The police only arrived while she was being dragged along a bushy road between Salema and Xikundu villages.

It was too late as she had already been seriously injured.

The cops had a tough time with the wild crowd, who threw stones at them.

It was not known whether the missing man had owed Portia money.

Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo, spokesman for the Limpopo police, said the crowd was dispersed with rubber bullets.

“The police have opened murder, public violence, arson and malicious damage to property cases and a manhunt for the suspects has been launched.

“The victim’s house and damaged Toyota vehicle were worth about R200 000.

“The victim was later transported to Malamulele Hospital, but she was declared dead on arrival.”

Mojapelo warned residents not to take the law into their own hands as the police would hunt them down.

Portia’s sister, Tinyiko, gave a man’s number to the SunTeam when asked for comment.

The man said the family would not comment on the matter and should ask the community why they did what they did.
