Ekurhuleni district commissioner Major-General Anna Sithole welcomed the sentence.
Last week, Sithole presented Detective Warrant Officer William Turner of the Nigel cop shop with a certificate for hard work and outstanding performance. This after Turner ensured that the accused was sentenced to life imprisonment for murder and attempted murder.
Another cop, Detective Sergeant Nkosinathi Qwabe of Daveyton Police Station was honoured with a certificate after securing a life sentence for an attempted murder accused.
In September 2022, accused Vusimuzi Nhlapo choked and assaulted his 86-year-old gogo.
Captain Nelda Sekgobela said a case of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm against Nhlapo was registered at the Daveyton cop shop.
He was arrested immediately on 21 September 2022.
Sekgobela said the case was changed to attempted murder after a doctor explained to the investigating officer that the victim had sustained injuries to her body and her respiratory system was affected, making it difficult for her to breathe due to strangulation.
The accused was found guilty after the investigator connected all the dots through thorough investigation.
Nhlapo was recently sentenced to life imprisonment by the Daveyton Magistrates Court.
