THE East London Magistrates Court sentenced Julius Kintu for the Contravention of Medicines and Related Substances Control Act on Tuesday, 6 December.
The 36-year-old was convicted of selling abortion tablets.
According to Captain Yolisa Mgolodela, the Hawks investigated suspects peddling Cytotec tablets to members of the community in East London, Eastern Cape.
“Cytotec tablets are used by medical practitioners to induce an abortion. Several purchases of the tablets were witnessed during the period between 21 October and 11 November 2021, wherein Kintu was ultimately arrested,” Mgolodela said in a statement.
She added that at the time of arrest, 120 tablets were confiscated together with cash to the value of R3 250.
After being released on bail, the accused made a series of court appearances and was convicted on 21 October.
“Kintu was given a combined sentence of R8 000 bail or 21 months direct imprisonment,” Mgolodela said.
