THE Durban Specialised Commercial Crime Court sentenced Harold Pillay (49) on Tuesday, 15 November, for theft of an attorney trust fund.
The court heard that Pillay was employed as a bookkeeper in one of the law firms in Pietermaritzburg, KZN.
According to Captain Simphiwe Mhlongo, the accused would only bank cheques and take cash for personal use.

“He would then make fraudulent deposit slips to cover his tracks. At least R660 000 of the trust fund was stolen, and a case of theft was reported at Pietermaritzburg Police Station in 2008,” Mhlongo said in a statement.
He said that the case docket was allocated to the Hawks’ serious commercial crimes investigation unit.
“Pillay was arrested and charged for theft of trust money,” Mhlongo said, adding that he was found guilty in August.
The accused was handed a five-year direct imprisonment for 209 counts of theft.
