A 31-YEAR-OLD man was hacked to death then torched by five men on Monday, 28 March at Kwa Mgodi area in Piet Retief.
According to police spokesman Brigadier Selvy Mohlala, the man was at home with his wife and child when a group of five men armed with bush knives entered their home.
“They then held the family at hostage and dragged the husband outside while the wife and child were kept inside. The man was then allegedly hacked by the suspects until he gave up,” Mohlala said.
Mohlala said thereafter the suspects reportedly pulled his body into a certain rondavel before setting it alight. They then fled the scene.
Cops were informed about the incident and a murder case with a count of arson was opened and manhunt launched.
Mohlala added that the motive for the killing was unknown at this stage and police were investigating, but couldn’t rule out the possibility that the murder was “witchcraft” related.
