A 30-YEAR-OLD man from Viljoenskroon in the Free State has been arrested following the gruesome killing of two people.

The man allegedly stabbed and killed his ex-girlfriend and hit her son (14) with a hammer on the head.

The police said the suspect thought the son was his ex-girlfriend’s new partner.

Police spokesman Captain Malebo Khosana said the man was arrested following a double murder that happened on Saturday, 14 May at about 3.55am.

Khosana said: “It is alleged that the 30-year-old suspect went to the ex-girlfriend’s house in the early hours where upon his arrival at the home he stabbed her to death and hit her son with a hammer on the head.

“The suspect alleged he thought the son was the ex-girlfriend’s current boyfriend. The suspect fled the scene thereafter. Paramedics were called to the scene and declared both the 34-year-old mother and her 14-year-old son dead.”

Khosana said the investigating officer, Constable Masilo Moreki, ensured that he left no stone unturned through the assistance of community members.

He was informed of the suspect’s whereabouts and managed to secure an arrest.

“The 30-year-old suspect will appear before the Viljoenskroon Magistrates Court on Wednesday, 18 May 2022 on a charge of murder,” said Khosana.
