A 30-year-old man accused of murder and rape of a policewoman appeared in the Bluedowns Magistrates Court on Tuesday, 3 October.

The accused, Mpumzi Nompetsheni, made a brief appearance and will be kept in custody until his bail application hearing on 12 October.

The 29-year-old constable was raped and murdered at Malgas informal settlement in Mfuleni over the weekend.

Her body was found dumped on the streets undressed on Sunday morning, 1 October.

Police arrested Nompetsheni after the officer’s clothes including underwear were found inside his shack. Marks at the scene suggested that she had been dragged from the suspect's shack.

After the arrest, residents from the area, mostly women, took matters into their own hands and demolished Nompetsheni's shack.

They made it clear that they do not want to see him back in their area even if he is to be released on bail.

The constable had accompanied a friend who had gone to visit a cousin in the area.

Minister of Police Bheki Cele, Deputy Minister Cassel Mathale, and National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola visited the victim's family to convey their condolences.

They also visited the family of Warrant Officer Lindela Mraqisa, Mathale's protector, who was shot on Saturday night in a mass shooting incident. Mraqisa with other four people, including a woman were sitting in two cars when gunmen fired shots at them.

The suspects allegedly arrived in another vehicle, dropped off a short distance away, and walked back to open fire before fleeing in their getaway vehicle.

Police spokesman Colonel Andre Traut stated that the incident is under investigation by serious violent crimes detectives.
