According to Colonel Priscilla Naidu, the victim was off duty on that fateful day, 12 February 2020.
“The victim had informed her family that she was going to New Brighton to consult with her sangoma. This was not the first time she had consulted the sangoma at his home.
“Later that day, at about 4pm, her body was found on the M17 in the bush by a jogger,” Naidu said.
She said the victim had suffered two gunshot wounds to the head.
“Information revealed that the victim was at the sangoma’s house before her death.”
Naidu said that during the investigation, investigating officer Detective Nigel Wright of the Provincial Organised Crime Investigation arrested the 30-year-old man and a sangoma (39), a few months after the murder.
They both appeared in court and were released on R1 000 bail each.
On Monday, 16 January 2023, they were both found guilty of murder, possession of an unlicensed firearm and possession of unlicensed ammunition. But the sangoma died on 6 April 2023 due to natural causes before sentencing could be delivered by the court.
The acting district commissioner for Nelson Mandela Bay, Brigadier Ronald Koll, welcomed the sentencing and commended the excellent investigation by Wright.
