Mamlambo is a snake that reportedly brings fortune to anyone who has it.

The snake is always linked to ukuthwala, a term for a dangerous, powerful procedure for long-term wealth and power, believed to involve the ownership of the wealth-giving snake.

According to a study titled “The Occult, the Erotic and Entrepreneurship” published by the University of Fort Hare, mamlambo is most often imagined as a snake, a mermaid, or a seductive woman.

The wealth that she reportedly grants comes at a terrible price. She wreaks havoc in her partner’s life, damaging or even destroying close personal relationships and undermining individual sexuality.

The study examines the origin of the mamlambo and discusses why the practice of ukuthwala has become widespread in southern Africa.

The SunTeam asked readers on social media their opinion on getting wealth through mamlambo and Paseka Paska Shelane said: “Having a lot of money, a nice home and driving a vrrrrpaaaa, but failing to live a normal life of a human being is a no for me.”

Rachel Moyo said: “Working hard for your money is more important than having these umamlambo because it will definitely end in tears.”

Deanx Dube said: “Everyone wants mamlambo but the problem is the sacrifices that come with it.”

Thabiso Thabza Segoana said: “I’d rather die poor and trying than to use anything against natural laws to become rich.”

Mpho Ngwatladi Moela said: “Working hard is draining, mamlambo is dangerous. If it was possible to use a cockroach, I will sign in.”

Florentina Mzaifani said: “That is the real game, once you’re in you’re in. The way out is death. Then all your wealth will be gone.”

Ndumiso N David Innes said: “As long as I do not have to sacrifice anyone, then I don’t mind using umamlambo. But at the end of the day, it’s about choice and preference. Nothing wrong and nothing right as long as you are doing what you believe in.”

Xola Thembalethu Exhibit Mekuto said: “I’d rather be poor than being rich by using witchcraft because along the way there are many sacrifices that you will have to make.”

Nto Sithole said: “Iskole ngisizamile, iForex ngiy’zamile,

Ilotto ngiy’zamile sek’sele yona inyoka.”’(I’ve tried school, I’ve tried Forex, I’ve tried Lotto and I’m left with a snake).
