HE’S 72 and still renting a shack.
And madala Joseph Mashigo has to part with R500 from his social grant every month for rent.
The madala said he applied for an RDP in 2002, but nothing came his way.
“I have been going to the municipality often, but I always get disappointed. I just don’t know what to do,” he said.
The madala said he has given up.
“It looks like these houses go to certain people and we are forgotten,” he said.
Madala Joseph from Zenzele in Daveyton, Ekurhuleni said he came to Gauteng from Mpumalanga many years ago to look for a job and has since settled in the province.
His wife died many years ago and he has two elderly kids who live in Mpumalanga.
“I’m just tired of staying in a shack and it is no longer conducive for my age. It has affected my health,” he said.
He said his shack gets flooded when it rains and rats are also a problem.
“I don’t sleep when it rains. I just don’t want to die in a shack, please help me.”
Ekurhuleni spokesman Zweli Dlamini said there’s no special programme that cater for elderly people who applied for RDP houses.
“Mkhulu needs to raise his plight with the local councillor or municipal office.
From there, we can see how best to help him,” he said.
