accreditation

A 36-YEAR-OLD woman, who allegedly had a phantom pregnancy and lied that her newborn baby has been kidnapped, has been released on bail.

On Wednesday, 6 July, the Protea Magistrate Court granted R700 bail to the suspect.

The case has been remanded to next month for further investigations.

On 1 July, the suspect from Zola in Soweto reported to the police that her eight-days-old baby has been kidnapped.

She said she was walking back home when an unknown man and woman in their 40s approached her. She said the man pointed at her with a gun and the woman snatched the baby from her arms before speeding off in a white car.

Three days later, the woman confessed to the police that she had lied about the crime, police said in a statement.

In her statement, the woman said she cooked up a plan with her pregnant colleague to give her the baby after birth. She said the biological mother didn’t want to keep the baby, however, she later changed her mind and took back the baby.

She was arrested and charged with perjury at Jabulani police station.

The biological mother from Boitumelo near Sebokeng in Vereeniging is yet to give a statement to the police.
