MINISTER in the Presidency for Electricity, Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, has briefed the media on the implementation of the Energy Action Plan.

He said efforts to resolve the electricity issue are broken down into three parts, the winter plan, medium-term interventions from September to April and long-term interventions.

Former Crime Intelligence administrator jailed!

Kimberley Magistrates Court sentenced a 42-year-old former Crime Intelligence administrator, Christopher Sebastian Johnson for defeating the ends of justice. During April 2021, the Hawks Serious Organised Crime Investigation team conducted an operation where eight (8) suspects were arrested in connection with drug trafficking allegations.  

After the arrest, cell phone records of the syndicate members were downloaded for further investigation. The team discovered confidential pictures of planned operation documents on the suspects’ cell phones. 

An inquiry was opened for further investigation which led the team to a Public Service Act (PSA) member attached to Provincial Crime Intelligence who was later arrested. Mr. Johnson was convicted in April 2023 after a lengthy trial. The member was dismissed from the service as a result of his conduct

On Thursday, 01 June 2023, Mr Johnson was then sentenced to six (6) years imprisonment of which two (2) years is suspended for a period of five years without the option of a fine. He will serve four (4) years of direct imprisonment. He is further declared unfit to possess a firearm.

Senior official bust for stealing TENDER docs!

A 27-year-old suspect was arrested by the Hawks Serious Corruption Investigation on Thursday, 1 June, in Delareyville, North West, for alleged theft and defeating the ends of justice.

On 31 March, the suspect allegedly stole tender documents and original invoices for a tender under investigation.

This is allegedly following the investigator’s request for the documents in question.

Cops spokesman Captain Tlangelani Rikhotsosaid the senior municipality official’s suspension allegedly relates to the tender whereby documents were stolen.

“The tender forms part of an ongoing investigation by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation,” he said.

Minister of Electricity Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa says there’s over 1 952 cases that have been opened related to corruption at Eskom since April 2022.

Ramokgopa was delivering his ministry’s Budget Vote Debate at Parliament’s Good Hope Chamber on Wednesday, 31 May.

He said corruption, including state capture, has hampered the power utility and is viewed as a contributor to its current challenges in generating adequate electricity generation capacity for the country.

“A total of 1 952 Eskom related cases were reported to the SA Police Service between 1 April 2022 and 29 May 2023, with 1 405 cases still under investigation, and 126 arrests have been made,” he said.

According to the minister, a further 302 Eskom related cases were reported to the SA Police Service between 1 April 2023 and 29 May 2023, with 285 of the cases still under investigation, and 31 arrests effected.

“A total of 214 arrests, emanating from combatting operations, were made through the collaborative efforts of law enforcement, together with key interdepartmental role players. The total value of items seized was R89 933 212,” Ramokgopa said.

The cops in North West province have arrested four suspects for dealing in counterfeit goods during the High-Density Operation conducted at Rustenburg on Monday, 29 May. All four suspects were issued with a fine of R1500-00.

The estimated value of all confiscated good is R14 million. Attached herewith please find the photographs of confiscated goods.Their arrests follow a multi-disciplinary density operation that was conducted by the Provincial Commercial Crime Investigation Unit (CCIU), Rustenburg Crime Intelligence (CI), South African Revenue Services (SARS), Customs as well as Law Firms, led to raiding of nine shops at City Square Shopping Centre as well as Rustenburg Mall.

During the search, counterfeit goods ranging from clothing, shoes, jewellery, perfumes and handbags were confiscated.  Some of the owners fled and abandoned their shops during the raid.

The suspects were caught in the act and taught a lesson by farm workers.

The City of Tshwane has warned Hammanskraal resident not to buy or drink water from water tankers moving around in the area, as the water is not tested.

The city allegedly received disturbing news from community members, alleging that there are roaming water tankers selling water to residents.

In a statement, the City said: “The city provides drinkable water to its communities in formal and informal areas in Hammanskraal free of charge. The water provided by the city’s authorised tankers has been declared safe for drinking after a series of tests conducted confirmed that it does not contain cholera.”

Ponzi scheme saga - IPID official bust!

Two men between the ages of 42 and 48 have been arrested on charges of corruption and extortion on Monday, 29 May. 

An Investigating officer of the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) allegedly conspired with two partners who are members of the public.

According to police spokesman Colonel Philani Nkwalase, they reportedly demanded five million rands from a businessman allegedly operating a Ponzi scheme in the country.

Nkwalase said the businessman and his employees reportedly paid two hundred and nineteen thousand to the IPID employee and his two accomplices.

“When the trio demanded more money, the matter was reported to the Hawks. A case was subsequently opened and investigated, which led to the arrest of the duo. The third suspect is still at large,” Nkwalase added.

Ex-cashier bust for THEFT!

Mthatha Hawks arrested Khululekani Koyana (33), a former cashier in Jumbo Cash and Carry, on Monday, 29 May, on theft charges.

In February 2023, the management of Jumbo Cash and Carry lodged a complaint against Koyana alleging that when Koyana was employed as a cashier during March 2022 and October 2022, he unlawfully and intentionally created fraudulent credit notes which he redeemed for cash for his personal benefit.

Cops spokeswoman Captain Yolisa Mgolodela said it is further alleged that he also used the manager’s card and password to authorise the fictitious transactions on the system without authority.

Mgolodela said investigations ensued and confirmed that Jumbo suffered a total prejudice of more than R360 000.

Koyana was arrested by the Hawks on Monday, 29 May.

He appeared in Mthatha Specialised Commercial Crimes Court on the very same day. The matter was remanded to 20 June.

Eskom expects to resume wage negotiations with trade unions in June.

LIMPOPO cops launched a manhunt for suspects after a cash-in-transit heist on the Senotlelo-Mokgwaneng main road in Matlelerekeng, Sekhukhune, on Monday, 29 May.

Cops spokesman Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said according to reports, a cash-in-transit van was travelling along the Senotlelo-Mokgwaneng road when it was attacked by a group of about ten suspects, driving a charcoal VW Jetta 5 and double cab bakkie.

“The heavily armed suspects started to shoot at the cash van. The suspects allegedly forced the security officials out of the van and robbed them of three firearms,” he said.

The suspects placed explosives in the cash van and took an undisclosed amount. During the incident, one of the suspects was accidentally shot by his accomplice, and his partners assisted him, and they all fled the scene.

No security officers were injured. A Task team has already been activated to investigate the cash-in-transit heists that are taking place and bring the culprits to book.

“This team of members must be relentless in tracking down these dangerous criminals. The community must also assist us with valuable information to help in their speedy arrest,” said Lieutenant General Hadebe.

Eskom WAGE talks to resume in June!

MZANSI’S power utility, Eskom expects to resume wage negotiations with trade unions in June.

Eskom and the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM), National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA) and Solidarity were involved in three rounds of negotiations without reaching an agreement.

“As a custom, the negotiations take place over three sessions of three days each. However, this year, all parties agreed to hold a fourth round of negotiations on 13 and 14 June 2023, with the view that there are prospects of reaching a settlement at the Central Bargaining Forum (CBF),” Eskom said.

“Eskom is hopeful that it and the labour unions will find each other for the benefit of the company and in the best interest of the country,” it further said.

Woman found with throat SLIT!

A body of an unknown woman was found in the street near an auction facility in Bohlokong Bethlehem, Free State.

Cops spokesperson Sergeant Mahlomola Kareli said they were called to Lombard Street near an auction facility after a passer-by came across the woman's body in her mid-20s.

"On arrival, police discovered the victim's throat had been slit. She is wearing an olive green jacket, a white t-shirt, and black sweatpants. She is unknown at this stage, and no arrests have been made yet," Kareli said.

Kareli said cops are investigating a case of murder, and anyone with information is urged to contact Detective Captain Screamer Tshabalala from Bohlokong Detectives on 082 453 0795 or call police crime line 08600 10111.
