PARENTS and guardians are up in arms.

This after a seven-year-old grade 2 girl was raped, allegedly by a grade 7 pupil (12) in the toilets of a primary school in Shongoane Village outside Lephalale in Limpopo on Friday, 19 April.

The shocking incident allegedly happened when the girl was taken to the toilet where she was unexpectedly raped.

According to reports, the girl arrived home complaining of injuries to her legs. Her mum examined her but thought it was only a minor injury.

After a few minutes, she started crying and was placed on the bed for observation. The mother then realised that something was wrong with her private part and quickly took her to a local clinic.

She was examined by medical staff who later confirmed that she had indeed been raped.

The incident has angered parents, and they are now calling for stricter security measures at schools to protect their kids.

A saddened parent (36) said: "We thought our kids were safe at school. We're shocked because we didn’t know that primary school children are now sexually active."

The parents said that there should be severe punishment for this incident.

Another parent said: "We never thought something like this could happen. Our kids are no longer safe. There should be serious consequences and the school should take action to prevent this from happening again."

Limpopo Department of Education spokesman Matome Taueatsoala said they were aware of the incident.

"We've sent the circuit head of the school district to the school and will issue an official statement afterwards," he said.

The incident has angered Social Development MEC Nandi Ndalane, who has called for urgent sexual health education from parents and teachers.

"These incidents seem to be increasing. Communities are urged to put in place local structures that can be trained by our social workers on sex and sexual health," she said.

Limpopo police spokesman Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said they had opened a case of rape after a seven-year-old pupil was raped at school.

"The minor suspect is known but not yet arrested and police investigations are continuing," he said.
