POLICE are still investigating the case of a 29-year-old woman who allegedly dumped her newborn baby in a plastic bag on Tuesday 29 August.
The infant was found abandoned in a dumping site under a bridge in Mariveni Village outside Nkowankowa, Limpopo on Tuesday.
She handed herself over to the police on Wednesday, 30 August and was remanded in custody until her court hearing on Monday, 4 September.
It's alleged that the baby's cries were heard by a passerby who then alerted the community leaders.
A resident who was on his way to work said he heard the baby's cries, which made him curios.
Limpopo police spokesman Colonel Malesela Ledwaba told Daily Sun that the Family Violence and Child Protection Unit (FCS) is investigating Tzaneen in a case of attempted murder.
"The case is related to the incident where a baby was dumped in a plastic bag. The mother will remain in custody until the next court date which will be on Monday, 4 September for further investigation," Ledwaba said.
According to community leader Isaac "Bazooka" Hlungwana, the Economic Freedom Fighter (EFF) Mopani regional leader who went to the scene, said the baby was still attached to the umbilical cord.
He said the baby was bleeding slightly from the head and was very cold.
Health spokesman Neil Shikwambana confirmed the incident and said the baby was transferred from Mariveni Clinic to Letaba Hospital.
"The child is currently in a stable condition at the hospital.
"We advise mothers who give birth to a child to consider giving the child to those in need instead of just throwing them away,” Shikwambana said.
