GiIVEN Funzani from Lwamondo, Khumbe Village in Limpopo remains in custody on charges of allegedly killing his wife.

Funzani (41) appeared before the Thohoyandou Magistrates Court on Thursday, 4 January and his case was postponed to Thursday, 18 January.

It's alleged that the 32-year-old woman was stabbed to death by her husband at their home on Tuesday, 2 January. An eyewitness alleged that the couple used to fight whenever they were drunk.

“The unemployed couple, who lived with an elderly woman, were known to the community for fighting, especially when they were drunk.

"Sadly, the wife has died now leaving behind two kids aged between four and six,” said the eyewitness.

Limpopo police spokesman, Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba said the police responded to the scene after receiving a complaint that a woman was brutally stabbed at about 2am.

“Upon their arrival together with the paramedics, the victim was found lying in a pool of blood with an open wound. She was certified dead at the scene. Preliminary investigations revealed that the woman was stabbed with a sharp object by her husband after the two engaged in a heated argument,” said Mashaba.

Funzani was arrested at the scene and charged with murder.

Limpopo Police Commissioner, Lieutenant-General Thembi Hadebe said domestic violence is a serious issue and SAPS urges individuals facing such situations to seek psychosocial support from professionals or support organizations.

“We also emphasise the importance of community members to report signs of domestic abuse or violence promptly to law enforcement authorities,” said Hadebe.

Munna Ndi Nyi Men's Forum chairman, Bardwell Mufunwaini said: “We  condemn the incident, and we wish government intervenes in helping forums like ours to reach more men from  communities because gender-based violence is rife in Vhembe.”
