LIEUTENANT Mosibidi Glenda Ramawela says she's proud of herself.

Ramawela is the one in charge of the soldiers, telling them what to do and how to do it. She said no one undermines her authority as they work fairly and respectfully.

Ramawela is the platoon commander of Alpha Company of the 5th Sai Battalion. She is from Tzaneen in Limpopo and said she knew nothing about being a soldier before she applied.

She has been with the SANDF since 2015 and said they do not normally have a soldier base or battalion.

"I knew nothing about the army until I heard from someone that you can apply to the SANDF. I did not dream about it until I was accepted. I am now enjoying being a soldier," she said.

Ramawela said she wants to become a general one day. She said being a soldier means a lot to her as she protects many people in the country.

She said she patrols to prevent undocumented immigrants, drug smugglers and the theft of vehicles at the Lesotho border. Ramawela said she inspires the young people in her village.

Lieutenant-Colonel Peet Visagie, SO1 Landops at the Joint Tactical Headquarters in the Free State, said they are always in constant contact with the farmers and the Free State Agriculture Union to let them know what is going on in the areas.

"During patrol, we control an area. If we control an area, we can prevent livestock from being stolen or from being moved at night," he said.

He said that he's hopeful the media can report on the difficulties and hard work that soldiers are doing on the border. Furthermore, the soldiers said that they don't normally have challenges because they're well trained and operate in any conditions.
