FORMER Al Ahly and Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane said education is important for everyone, including those who want careers in sport.
He was speaking at the launch of the Rosina Sedibane Modiba Sports School in Laudium, Tshwane, on Tuesday, 23 August.
Mosimane said he was spotted to play soccer when he was in grade 11 and without school, he would not be where he was today.
“I always make sure that my players learn so they are able to do match analysis. They learn about nutrition and how to look after themselves. This can only be achieved with the basis of education.”
Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi said the department wanted to open schools of specialisation to address skills shortages and nurture talent. “We want to defeat the mindset that if you play soccer, you can’t go to school. Give our kids an opportunity and they will demonstrate their capabilities.”
Principal Nakedi Manamela said the school would serve many generations.
