The scene where armed suspects were gunned down during a shoot-out with cops in Inanda, Durban.

IT looks like cops are sweeping the streets of Durban.

This is because there has been another gun battle between thugs and cops, which resulted in five suspects dead and one National Intervention Unit member injured.

The shooting battle happened in Inanda, north of Durban, on Monday night, 30 October.

This follows other shoot-out where thugs died.

One happened on 17 October in Ntuzuma, north of Durban, where four people died and another occurred on in Marrianhill on 25 October, where two suspects died.

KZN police spokesman Brigadier Jay Naicker said a team made up of different police units conducted an operation at 11pm after intelligence led them to a house near the Dube Village Mall in Inanda.

"As the police officers approached the house, they were met with gunfire. A member of the National Intervention Unit was shot in the leg and was transported to hospital where he remains in a stable condition. Following a heated gun battle, five suspects were fatally wounded," he said.

"Police found four pistols in their possession. A manhunt continues for more suspects. The Independent Police Investigative Directorate has been summoned for further investigations."

Brigadier Naicker said the fifth suspect was found dead at a house close to the original crime scene.

"It's believed that he fled the scene during the shoot-out and sought refuge in a nearby house. The suspect passed away due to his injuries while hiding from police.

“The owners of the home came forward later in the morning when it was discovered that the man had passed away. Police will also be looking into why the owners of the house allowed the man to hide in their home," he said.

KZN police commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi said they will continue hunting down criminals who are terrorising innocent residents in Inanda.

A resident said most thugs hide in Inanda because the area is congested.

"Cops should work hard and find more thugs that hide in Inanda. These thugs rob and even kill residents. They break into houses and spaza shops," he said.
