A 22-year-old mother dumped her school exams to embark on a search for her missing two-year-old son, Ayabonga Myeni.
Kwandile Khumalo from Gedleza Village in Jozini, KZN who is a grade 11 people in Mpumalanga, dropped everything and rushed back home when she was told her son had gone missing.
“I was in the middle of writing my exams, but I couldn’t stay there after being told that my child was nowhere to be found. My mind couldn’t focus not knowing where my baby is,” she said.
Little Ayabonga was last seen on 6 June by his paternal grandparents who stayed with him.
Kwandile said his gogo left him under the supervision of his mkhulu while she went to fetch water from the nearby stream. Mkhulu let Ayabonga and other kids of his age to go play outside not knowing that he'd try to follow his gogo.

“Mkhulu let them out as they used to play in the yard, and they never left the yard without an adult but that day, Ayabonga decided follow of his gogo. We don’t know what happened along the way because he never reached her,” said Kwandile.
She said both his grandparents started noticing that he was missing when gogo returned from the river and saw the other two kids playing in the yard without Ayabonga.
“They questioned the four-year-old kid who was playing with them and he pointed out that Ayabonga left the yard in the same route that gogo used. They then started searching for him with no luck. They also alerted me and I rushed back home,” she said.
Devastated Kwandile said she joined the search and reported the matter the cops, adding the police came and searched almost everywhere with no luck.
“Now that we have searched almost everywhere, I believe that my child was abducted because if he was around the village, we would have found him by now,” said Kwandile.
She said ever since her son went missing she has been having sleepless nights thinking if he is still alive or not.
“I pray that we find him alive because I don’t know how I will carry on with my life if he is no more,” she said.
KZN police spokeswoman Constable Thenjiswa Ngcobo, said Jozini police cops have opened missing persons case after the 2-year-old baby reportedly went missing on Tuesday, 6 June 2023.
“The search for him is still continuing,” said Ngcobo.
