AN ANC councillor has been killed.
Mzwandile "Nganono" Shandu was gunned down in a hail of bullets at Umlazi in Durban, KZN on Wednesday, 20 September.
The incident happened while driving his car around the Umlazi township.
His assassination comes after he survived a hit a few weeks back.
Shandu was a ward councillor serving under Mkhambathini Municipality in the KZN Midlands.
Mkhambathini municipal speaker Thembalikho Gwala said the incident comes on the heels of a recent attempt on Shandu’s life that occurred during the evening of 20 August.
He said that Shandu had been chairing the municipal public account committee portfolio for seven years.
“On behalf of Mkhambathini Municipality, I would like to send our deepest condolences to his family and the residents of Mkhambathini that he served,” Gwala said.
ANC Moses Mbhida region said they were shaken by the barbaric killing of their councillor.

Regional secretary Samora Ndlovu said they hope the cops will work around the clock to bring the perpetrators to book.
“Comrade Shandu will be remembered as a humble man who was true to the aspirations of our people. He served the residents of Ward 7 with respect, dedication and utmost excellence since he took the reins in 2016,” said Ndlovu.
The MEC of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) in KZN, Bongi Sithole-Moloi, urged anyone who may have information that could help in the arrest of the perpetrators to cooperate with law enforcement agencies.
She said that while they strive for stability in their council, it is concerning that the province was confronted with killings they had hoped were behind them.
“Our democracy has matured significantly, and we must remember that. In times of disagreement, there are always peaceful channels to address issues.
"Violence will never be a solution to our problems. Instead, it only fosters fear and instability within our council,” she said.
