WHEN residents in KwaMashu, KZN saw that a cash van had been bombed, they rushed to the scene to help themselves on the cash.
Those who got there first after the criminals had left, braved the flames of two burning cars and took a few hundred of the leftover money.
On Wednesday morning, 4 October, a cash-in-transit van was robbed on Malandela Road in KwaMashu, north of Durban. It's alleged that the cash van was travelling on Malandela Road when unknown suspects blocked it.
A gunfight ensued between the thugs and the security guards. They overpowered the three guards and took their weapons. They then blew up the cash van and escaped with undisclosed amount of money.
Resident Thabiso Mntungwa told Daily Sun that he was on his way to the shopping centre when he heard a loud noise.
"I got out and saw smoke coming from the road. Then two vans drove away from the scene. I was afraid to go out, but other people rushed to the scene. My neighbour came back and told me that people were stealing money. When I got there, there was nothing to be seen. Other people were busy taking coins like 20 and 10 cents. There was nothing left," Thabiso said.

He said everything happened so fast, like in a movie.
Another resident, Thabisile Ngcobo, said she was afraid to go there but allegedly saw a man from the area carrying many R200 notes.
KZN police spokesman Colonel Robert Netshiunda said cops have launched a manhunt for an unknown number of suspects in connection with a cash-in-transit robbery that happened in KwaMashu on Wednesday, 4 October morning.
"A cash delivery van was travelling on Malandela Road when it was attacked by the suspects who were travelling in at least two vehicles," he said.
He said the suspects overpowered three security guards and allegedly robbed them of their firearms before fleeing from the scene with an undisclosed amount of money.
"Police are appealing to anyone who can provide information on the whereabouts of the suspects to contact their nearest police station or call the emergency number 08600 10111. Tip-offs can also be passed on via the MySAPS app," Netshiunda said.
