WORKERS who clean the streets in Khayelitsha, Cape Town have put down their brooms as they're demanding their pay.

The workers who work for WasteCor, a company contracted by the City of Cape Town to clean the streets in Khayelitsha, claimed that they haven't been paid since January 2024.

The company allegedly owes each worker between R6 000 and R11 000.

One of the cleaners, Noloyiso Sidloyi (54) said they haven't received money since January and their employer has been giving them one excuse after another.

“They managed to buy bibs and brooms for us to work, but they don’t want to pay us. We have families to look after and we can't feed them with explanations. We don’t eat bibs and brooms. We want our money,” she said.

Noloyiso has been working since January and was supposed to be paid R3 600 per month. She said the company owes her about R10 000.

Another cleaner, Nomfundiso Sebenzile (58), said her children and grandkids are hungry as she is the only breadwinner at home. She said she doesn’t understand why the company doesn’t pay them when they are being paid by the City of Cape Town.

“I now owe a lot of people because I must borrow money to feed my family. I always promise these people that I will pay them back at the end of the month, but I don’t get paid. I now appear to them as someone who lies,” said Nomfundo.

WasteCor’s boss Sabelo Mbolompo didn’t want to comment and referred Daily Sun to the City of Cape Town about the matter. “The best people to speak to about this matter at this point is the municipality,” he said.

The City of Cape Town said they're addressing the matter. “The contractor is in breach of the contract, and the city is pursuing recourse regarding the contract. The city is working to resolve this in the interest of the communities as expeditiously as possible,” said the city.
