A DISTRAUGHT mum from Khayelitsha, Cape Town who lost her two children in a shack fire while she went out for booze needs help.

The fire ate Melezwa Mntwini's shack on Saturday, 13 April while her two children, Athanande (10) and Ingakuthi (5) were asleep.

The 31-year-old mum was arrested two days later and appeared in court where she was released on R800 bail on Tuesday, 23 April.

She said:

I don’t know what to do. I feel a part of me is dead. It died with my children. I’m so sorry to my late children. I’m sorry to everyone I've disappointed.

Melezwa, who lives with her aunt at Masiphumelele kasi in Fish Hoek, said she left her children at home that day and told them she'd be back. She said they locked themselves in from the inside and went to bed.

“I’m sad that my children are no more. Maybe I could have saved them if I was around. If ever I get an opportunity to meet them again, all I can do is apologise to them profusely,” said Melezwa.

Melezwa said that she needs money to conduct a DNA test for her dead children but doesn’t know where to start.

She said the father of her son contributed R1 000, but R800 was used to bail her out of prison. Family members have so far contributed R600, but she needs R2 500 to conduct the tests.

Besides DNA tests, Melezwa also needed money to get new identity cards and birth certificates for her kids.

Melezwa’s aunt, Nomillion Thimba (56), who lives with her, said she doesn’t know how to help her as she cries all the time. “She is heartbroken and cries all the time. She is in pain, and we sometimes don’t know what to do,” she said.

National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesman Eric Ntabazalila said Melezwa will be in court again in June. “Her case has been postponed to 19 June for further investigation,” said Ntabazalila.
