End of the road for Khayelitsha 'rapist'

KHAYELITSHA residents are happy that a man accused of raping a woman on Friday, 11 August and setting her shack on fire is dead.

This after the alleged rapist was shot dead on Friday, 18 August.

Residents said the man was arrested after the incident but were surprised to see him walking freely on the streets the following day.

The victim, woman (28) said on Monday, 14 August, the day the suspect was supposed to appear in court, he wasn’t there.

The woman allegedly went Lingelethu Police Station where the suspect was processed after his arrest but was told to go to Harare Police Station to enquire as there were no holding cells there.

At the Harare cop shop, she was allegedly told that the suspect's name was on the list of people who appeared in court and that the police did not understand why he had not appeared.

"We were all shocked and we went back to the cop shop, but the police were also confused of what could have happened," she said.

While the police were still trying to find out what could have happened. The man was allegedly shot and killed at a shebeen on Friday night.

A resident said: "Good riddance, we thank whosoever shot this dog!"

The victim said since she knew the suspect was on the streets, she had left her parents' home and gone to stay with friends as she feared for her life.

"I heard that he was shot and killed at a shebeen. I was called to the scene on Saturday morning by people saying that he was shot on Friday night, 18 August. Indeed, he was killed. I am relieved," she said.

The family of the suspect confirmed his death but refused to give more details.

Police spokesman Captain Frederick Van Wyk confirmed the murder. 

"Lingelethu West police are investigating a murder case following a shooting incident on Friday, 18 August around 11.25pm at a premises in Ntytyane Street, Ilitha Park, Lingelethu West.  

"According to reports, the members responded to a shooting incident at the mentioned address. On the scene, they found body of an adult male, who was lying on his back with multiple gunshot wounds to the head and body. The victim was declared deceased on the scene by medical personne,” said Van Wyk.
