OPERATIONS at Thelle Mogoerane Mogoerane Hospital in Vosloorus, Ekurhuleni and Bheki Mlangeni District Hospital’s surgical ward in Jabulani, Soweto, are back to normal.
This after smoke and leak incidents that happened on Friday, 11 November.
The Gauteng Department of Health has assured the public that operations at Thelle Mogoerane Regional Hospital are continuing as normal. Health spokesman Motalatale Modiba said one of the five back-up generators situated at the lower ground of the hospital had mechanical failure following load shedding that affected Volsoorus in Ekurhuleni.
He said the generator started emitting smoke and a pungent smell that affected the out-patient department that caters for patients classified as stable walk-ins.
“Patients who were on site, together with staff, were safely guided to the assembly point at around 1.30pm while the facility’s management unit and on-site engineers established the source of the smoke,” said Modiba.
He said the affected generator was shut down and the air cleared within 30 minutes of the incident.
“Services at the OPD Section were back to operation. Meanwhile, emanating from a separate incident earlier, we can confirm that operations at Bheki Mlangeni District Hospital’s surgical ward have not been impacted by a water leak that has since been addressed.”
The continuous rain, which washed debris into the drainage system, led to some of the pipe blockages, resulting in a water leak that affected the nurses’ reception area of the surgical ward.
No patients were impacted and the ward continues to operate as normal.
