JSC recommends Judge Zondi for Electoral Court chair position

accreditation

THE Judicial Service Commission has nominated the Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) Judge Dumisani Zondi for the position of chairperson of the Electoral Court.

He beat two female candidates, his SCA colleague Judge Baratang Mocumie and Kimberley Judge Mpho Mamosebo.

The commission decided not to recommend any candidate for the judge-member of the court, and will leave the vacancy open.

Zondi, during the interview earlier on 5 October, told the commission that he would increase the court from five to 10 judges who could sit in two simultaneous panels, in anticipation of the increased workload of the 2024 elections, where independent candidates will run.

Deputy Chief Justice Mandisa Maya asked Zondi why should the commission recommend him over his colleague Mocumie considering that there were no women presidents in the courts currently.

“You’ll have to consider the experience and what I can add and where I want to take the court,” said Zondi.

Zondi was an attorney and then a Western Cape judge before joining the SCA and Competition Appeal Court in 2014.
