CITY of Joburg Executive Mayor, Kabelo Gwamanda is worried about high water usage in the metro.
Gwamanda spoke at the 18th Ordinary Council meeting on Thursday, 29 February, in Braamfontein.
He said the consumption of water is at an alarming rate and should be minimised.
“The City of Joburg consumes 18% of the 40% of the total water that Rand Water supplies to Gauteng, and it’s a concern because out of all the municipalities, the city is the highest consumer (of water),” he said.
Gwamanda said despite close to two million people leaving the metro from 2023 to now, water consumption levels didn't drop.
“Madam Speaker, as you might have noticed from the stats where the City of Joburg is said to have lost two million people from last year and this year and yet our consumption is ridiculously high."

He added that there was a technical task team from Rand Water and Joburg Water to investigate reasons behind the losses.
“To mitigate the sources of our water losses for the preseveration of our water security, we've put plans in place at our water facilities."
Meanwhile, the city failed to pass some items on the agenda due to absent councillors.
They were not available for various reasons.
One of the biggest opposition parties, ActionSA, was at another event where they officially introduced their premier candidate, Funzi Ngobeni, ahead of the national and provincial elections set for 29 May.
Funzi will compete with the popular and current premier Panyaza Lesufi from the ANC, DA candidate and former City of Tshwane Mayor Solly Msimanga, as well as Patriotic Alliances’ Kenny Kunene, among others.
Kunene is also a Member of the Mayoral Committee in the city.
