THE 10 people who died in a horrific accident outside Polokwane, Limpopo on Tuesday, 6 September have been laid to rest.
Limpopo Transport and Community Safety MEC Polly Boshielo joined mourners at the mass funeral service held at Tshixwadza Sport Grounds on Saturday, 10 September. Boshielo refuted a media statement issued by her communications unit that the accident was caused by fatigue and possible reckless driving.
“I want to put it on the record that investigations to find out what caused the accident are still ongoing,” she said.
The 10 people who died included members of the Nwedamutswu royal family, relative and friends.
They were travelling from a funeral in Gauteng when their vehicle collided head-on with a truck on the N1 bypass near Mall of the North in Polokwane.

Gogo Annah Aphane (90), Doreen Nwedamutswu (38), Gordon Nwedamutswu (46) and Othathile Nwedamutswu (2), as well as Tshedza Phalanndwa (29), were buried in Tshixwadza, while the others were laid to rest in Soshanguve, Mpumalanga and the Eastern Cape.
Chairman of Nwedamutswu Royal Council, Dr Laune Kone said the families were still saddened by the loss of their loved ones’ passing. Kone said they were supposed to install a new chief on Saturday, but they were instead burying their loved ones.
Thovhele Ratshibvumo II Rammbuda urged the Nwedamutswu royal family to love each other and not fight for the throne.
