THE DESPERATE mother was going to protect her son with her life, even though the hijacker had a gun.
She struggled with the thug, took the gun, pointed it straight at him and pulled the trigger – but it didn’t fire.
THAT’S WHEN THE WOMAN REALISED THEY HAD BEEN FIGHTING OVER A TOY GUN!
THE hijacker must have thought it was going
to be an easy hit when he saw the mother and her child at Festival Mall in Kempton Park, Ekurhuleni on Sunday, 27 November.
After the woman had taken the gun from him, he grabbed her wallet and cellphone and made a run for it.
But he didn’t get far. The out-of-luck criminal was chased by a security guard.
The 42-year-old hijacker was bust and handed over to the police.
Captain Jethro Mtshali said the suspect has been charged with robbery and possession of an imitation firearm.
The victim, who cannot be named, told Daily Sun that it was raining and she and her six-year-old son took cover under the roof of the mall. When the rain stopped, they walked to their car.
“I unlocked the car and put my parcels on the seat,” she said.
“But then a neatly dressed man suddenly appeared and pointed a gun at me and told me to drive out of the parking area.”
She said she panicked.
“The keys fell out of my hand.
“I couldn’t drive off as I had been ordered because I was looking for the keys,” she said.
“He kept on shouting at me, telling me to drive but I couldn’t find the keys.”
She said the hijacker who was now sitting on the back seat of the car joined in the search.
“As he knelt down, I saw my chance and grabbed the gun.
“We fought over the weapon until I overpowered him,” she said.
“I got out of the car, pointed the gun at him. I wanted to shoot him, but the gun didn’t fire.”
She said that for a moment, they just stood and looked at each other.
“Then he grabbed my cellphone and wallet and ran away,” she said.
The security guard heard her screaming and gave chase. The suspect was bust.
“It was by God’s grace that keys got lost.
“I don’t know what would have happened to us if had he managed to take us out of the parking area,” she said.
She later found the keys under one of the car’s seats.
Captain Mtshali said the suspect appeared in the Kempton Park Magistrates Court on Monday, 28 November, and his next appearance is this coming Monday.
