CASH flew into the wind as gunmen hit a Fidelity cash van on the R538 in Mahushu Village outside Hazyview, Mpumalanga at about 9am on Friday.
Villagers were seen helping themselves as they wrestled for the cash.
A motorist said they saw a white Mercedes-Benz full of men suddenly ram a cash van from the road, forcing it to fall over as they fired shots at it.
“The car came from the Hazyview direction and rammed the Fidelity cash van off the road. The gang started shooting at the cash van. We had to duck and dive from flying bullets,” said the motorist.
“They overpowered the two security guards and dragged them out. Then they blew up the van, looted the cash and set the Benz on fire before fleeing in a white Toyota VVTI.”
The witness said residents helped themselves to the cash lying scattered around, even pushing the van out the way to get to the money. When cops got to the scene, the gang had disappeared.
Brigadier Selvy Mohlala confirmed a Fidelity vehicle had been hit. “The people in the Mercedes-Benz started shooting at the two guards and they surrendered, fearing for their lives and got out of the vehicle. An undisclosed amount of cash was taken. A Toyota VVTI was used as a getaway vehicle and the Mercedes-Benz was burnt at the scene.”
He said it was unknown how many suspects were involved.
“No arrest has been made. The investigation is still continuing.”
