WHAT started as a boozy birthday celebration ended in bloodshed.

Bandile Mahlaba (39) was celebrating his birthday in KwaMashu K section, north of Durban, on Saturday night, 12 November when gunmen stormed in and opened fire.

Bandile and his sister Makhosi (31) were shot and wounded.

Their father, Bethwell, said he was inside the house when he heard two gunshots from outside.

“My wife and I then heard someone shouting that Makhosi was shot. My wife ran out to see and as she was leaving, another gunshot went off. I got up and followed her,” he said.

Bethwell said they found both their children lying on the ground and bleeding heavily.

“One of their friends rushed them to the nearby clinic. They were transferred to King Edward Hospital,” he said.

Bethwell said Makhosi is in a critical condition but Bandile is recovering well.

“No one else was shot. I don’t understand why this happened,” he said.

Meanwhile, two men were beaten to death not far from the Mahlaba home. It’s alleged they were attacked by residents who saw them running immediately after the gunshots went off.

A resident said they were beaten beyond recognition with bricks and stones were thrown at them.

“I don’t think they are from our area because nobody could recognise them,” he said.

The resident said he couldn’t say whether they were the gunmen.

“All I can say is that I heard they were seen running and when they were asked where they were going, they couldn’t say,” he said.

KZN police spokeswoman Constable Thenjiswa Ngcobo said: “On arrival, cops found the bodies of two males with multiple injuries. They were both declared dead on the scene,” she said.
