WHEN a resident found an abandoned baby at the side of the road last week, the hunt for his mum started.

After a brief investigation cops bust a woman (34) from Umlazi V section, south of Durban.

She was charged with child abandonment and appeared in the Chatsworth Magistrates Court yesterday.

Gugu Mbulu (30) found the baby. She called the cops on Monday to find out how the child was doing.

“They told me the mother had been caught and arrested,” she said.

“I was so worried about the baby over the weekend and eventually decided to phone them.”

Cops had told her the baby was with social workers.

“I wish they’d allow me to see the baby. I just want to see how he’s doing,” she said.

Gugu said she was glad the evil mum had been caught.

Colonel Thembeka Mbele said: “The baby was taken to hospital for medical attention and is in good health.”

Mbele said the docket had been transferred to the Chatsworth child protection unit for further investigation.

She said the unit traced the mother to Umlazi V section after the investigation.

“A 34-year-old woman was placed under arrest for child abandonment on the day the child was dumped,” Mbele said.

“The mother later appeared in the Chatsworth Magistrates Court and was released by the magistrate on warning. She’ll be back in court next Wednesday.”
