A FRUSTRATED gogo from Buhle Park in Ekurhuleni regrets being a Good Samaritan.

This is after she felt pity for an alleged social worker and lent him R1 000 for petrol.

Gogo Bongiwe Radebe (63) said the tsotsi social worker wanted money for petrol and would pay back the money as soon as he got paid on 29 February. Because he had helped her to re-apply for a foster care grant, gogo thought she should return the favour.

Because she didn't have the money, gogo went and borrowed the money from a mashonisa on behalf of the social worker. Today, the gogo regrets having done that.

The social worker is nowhere to be found and the kwaai mashonisa wants his money plus R500 interest.

Frustrated gogo Bongiwe said she went to the social worker's workplace at the Germiston Social Development offices on Monday, 4 March, and was told he didn't report for duty.

She was told the said social worker didn't even own a car and that gogo was not the first victim.

The tsotsi social worker is said to be targeting vulnerable elderly people.

"He takes addresses from our files and pretends to be doing home visits, only to come and knock us," she said.

Gogo Bongiwe said the tsotsi social worker came to her house on 12 February.

"He's tall and dark," she said.

The worried gogo said the mashonisa threatened to take items from her house if she didn't pay the money.

"I don't have R1 500. I felt pity for him because he helped me, little did I know he was a crook. I want him to pay back mashonisa's money. I gave him the money with a good heart. He pretended to be conducting home visits, but came here to scam me," she said.

Gogo's nightmare started when she went to apply for a foster care grant for one of her adopted children.

Spokesman for Gauteng Social Development, Motsamai Motlhaolwa said: "The Department is aware of the matter as it was reported by the client to the department. The Department will conduct a misconduct investigation on the alleged offence and internal disciplinary processes will follow based on outcome of the investigation."
