SECURITY for our gogo is a serious matter!

This is the message from the family of world renowned Ndebele artist, Dr Esther Mahlangu.

The artist known for her bold paintings that reference her Ndebele heritage was attacked at her home in Siyabuswa, Mpumalanga on Saturday, 19 March.

Her attackers allegedly robbed her of her firearm, cash and personal items after tying her up and beating her. Family spokesman George Mashiane said the government had claimed the gogo as its national icon but didn’t treat her as such.

“We expect her safety to be a priority as a national figure,” said Mashiane.

Mahlangu’s brother-in-law Gerlboi Mahlangu said it hurt to see thugs take advantage of vulnerable people. On Wednesday, 23 March, Mpumalanga Premier, Refilwe Mtshweni-Tsipane and Community Safety MEC Vusi Shongwe visited the Mahlangu house.

Shongwe urged members of the community to work with the police to find the suspects.

Mpumalanga police spokesman Brigadier Selvy Mohlala said police boss Lieutenant-General Semakaleng Manamela appointed a team of detectives to focus on the case.
