GOGO Nolufefe Ngcaza (58) from Gugulethu applied for a house more than 30 years ago.
And last month she got the keys to her new RDP house at the Gugulethu infill housing project.
But she never got to live in it.
Gogo’s only child, Busisiwe Ngcaza (30), said they intended to move in at the end of September but gogo who was already sick was admitted to hospital on 28 September and died on 3 October.
“My mother never slept in her house. I was born in 1992 and my mother was already on the waiting list at the housing department,” said Busisiwe.
Councillor Thembinkosi Mjuza, who recently built a shack for 66-year-old gogo Ntombenhle Sopotela from Gugulethu, said it was painful that elderly people were dying without having lived in decent homes.
He said people like gogo Nolufefe and gogo Sopotela should have moved into their houses a time long ago.
“Gogo Nolufefe died before she could live in her house. Today the community is building a shack for a 66-year-old woman who is on the waiting list but without a house,” said Mjuza.
“These are old people who should have been living in their homes long ago.
“The government needs to look at ways to address this problem.”

Busisiwe said she would move into her mother’s house with a heavy heart.
“What consoles me is that at least she died knowing that she had a house for her daughter and three grandchildren,” said Busisiwe.
The funeral service will be held at her new house on Saturday, 15 October. RDP house beneficiaries will be the guard of honour.
