A 63-YEAR-OLD gogo appeared before the Welkom Magistrates Court on Thursday, 16 September, facing charges of fraud.
According to Captain Christopher Singo, in April 2017, the gogo allegedly used false tender documents from the Department of Health to borrow money from a well-off person, and could not pay it back.
“As a result, the victim suffered a total loss of R510 000. The matter was then reported to the Hawks for further investigation, which resulted in the arrest of the accused.
“The case was remanded to 7 October to be transferred to the regional court,” Singo said in a statement, adding that the accused was granted R5 000 bail.

In another case, tax fraudster Mayisewa Makhubo (38) appeared before the Frankfort Regional Court on Thursday, 16 September. He was convicted and sentenced as charged for contravening the Tax Administration Act.
Singo said a preliminary probe by SARS uncovered Makhubo’s fraudulent activities, that amounted to more than R1 million.
“The incident took place between 2016 and 2019. The matter was then reported to the Hawks’ serious commercial crime investigation in Bloemfontein. Makhubo was served court summons on 18 October,” he added.
Singo said the court sentenced Makhubo to four years of direct imprisonment.
