"GAUTENG, if I fail to fight crime in our province, I will hand over my resignation.”

Premier Panyaza Lesufi said this on Tuesday, 13 February, during his address ahead of the launch of 6 000 face recognition CCTV Cameras that will be install in townships, business districts, areas with high crime spots, roads, schools and other public places to fight crime in the province.

The deal was made possible through a partnership agreement with Joburg-based security system supplier Vumacam. Lesufi said although it might seem as if many have lost the battle against crime, he was willing to put on a fight.

Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi led the signing of a partnership agreement with CEO of Vumacam, Ricky Crook to install 6000 CCTV cameras in townships, business districts, areas with high crime spots, roads, schools and other public places to fight crime in the province.

“I am gatvol with crime. We can't be held hostage in our own country and our own province by criminals. We can't be scared even at our own shadows because these criminals can pounce at any time.

“We can't in our own country, province and houses be at the mercy of these criminals and let them behave as if we have lost this battle against these criminals. If you have lost the battle, don't count me in. I will fight these criminals until they leave this province,” Lesufi said.

According to the third quarter crime statistics, crime in Gauteng has risen as compared to other provinces, despite a 2,6% decline.

Murder, attempted murder and common assault cases increased during the period under review, while rape and sexual assault decreased.

At least 1 008 sexual offenders were arrested, and 42 life-term imprisonments were secured with an additional 1 084 years in prison for the quarter under review.

This, according to Lesufi, painted a worrisome image for the province and vowed to not surrender to anyone until he sees these cameras dominate local communities like Diepsloot and Tembisa where crime is rife.

CEO of Vumacam, Ricky Crook and a representative said these cameras are effective and efficient in catching out a criminal in a matter of minutes.

This as number plates will be captured, sent through the system and the alleged suspects care located in 15 minutes.

He emphasised that an investment like this will ensure that every part of the province is secure.
