SHELLY Tolbart is gatvol with a mfundisi, who she said spent money meant for her son’s tombstone.

The 50-year-old from Zwelitsha in Nyanga, Cape Town, said after she lost her son in November 2021, she was at the mortuary with her undertaker when she ran into local mfundisi Nono Ncinithwa.

She said Nono was also an undertaker and she decided to support his business by hiring him to handle the tombstone, which he charged her R8 000 for.

She said she paid a deposit of R4 000 in cash and there was no contract.

Shelly said the only proof she had was what was going to be written on the tombstone. She said a few days after she paid a deposit, mfundisi came to her house asking for more money.

“I refused and told him to return my deposit if he was unable to do the work as per our agreement.

“We agreed that he will finish the job before I can pay the balance,” she said.

Shelly said since then, mfundisi had been playing hide and seek.

She said she even went to his family home but was told he had moved to Delft.

An angry Shelly even put up posters on the walls of his church.

The posters had a photo of him and asked anyone who knew where he was to call her because he took her money.

Shelly said someone contacted her with his new address but when she visited him, he told her stories again. She managed to recover R2 000 after some church members brought it to her house, saying it was from the pastor.

The SunTeam spoke to Ncinithwa, who said: “I owe her R2 000. I’m not running away from her. I just need a few days to look for the money.”
