ONLY 60 of the over 80 suspects arrested about a week ago in Krugersdorp, West Rand, are expected back in Krugersdorp Magistrates Court on Wednesday, 10 August.
The men were bust after the shocking rape of eight women while shooting a music video at an abandoned mine in West Village on 28 July.
Initially, over 80 suspects were arrested after a sting police operation, but 20 were later identified as minors and will be tried separately.
The suspects are facing charges of being in the country illegally. More may be added if they’re positively linked to the victims.
Political parties were present outside the court, including ActionSA, Patriotic Alliance and the ANC.
ActionSA members told Daily Sun they were prepared to come to every court appearance until the suspects were sentenced.
Ward 128 councillor Themba Mabunda said they stood in solidarity with the victims. “We heard there was an identity parade last week, so we want to hear from the court who has been linked to the rape incident.”
He said they also wanted the case to be a priority.
Meanwhile, Police Minister Bheki Cele said on Tuesday, 9 August that the alleged gang-rape victims went through an identification process. He also said that since the dawn of their operation to track down illegal miners, 350 people had been arrested.
