ON Monday, 13 February, the Hawks’ Pietermaritzburg serious commercial crime investigation unit arrested a suspect (40) for two counts of fraud that happened at the office of the premier in KZN.
According to Captain Simphiwe Mhlongo, it is alleged that the suspect applied for a project manager’s post in 2010 and submitted fraudulent qualifications.
He was employed and in 2019, further applied for the position of deputy director and was appointed.
“The Department of Public Administration conducted qualification verification and the suspect failed to submit original documents as requested. It was discovered that his qualifications were fraudulent and disciplinary steps were taken against him.”
Mhlongo said the office of the premier was defrauded of R3,7 million, and a case of fraud was reported at Pietermaritzburg Police Station.

“The case docket was allocated to the Hawks for further investigation, and the suspect was charged yesterday.”
The suspect is expected to appear in the Pietermaritzburg Regional Court on 16 March.
