FIVE pupils have lost their lives while scores sustained serious injuries after a bus they were travelling in crashed.
The bus overturned inside the Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park between Hlabisa and Mtubatuba, northern KZN.
It is alleged that on Tuesday morning, 8 August pupils from Mchitheki High School in Nongoma were on their way to an educational tour in Richards Bay when the accident happened.
It is not clear what caused the accident. KZN Education MEC Mbali Frazer said according to the report they received, five grade 10 and 11 pupils lost their lives and the driver of the bus also died on the scene.

Frazer said:
Nongoma Municipality Mayor Mshangane Ndabandaba who rushed to the scene said the report that they got from the ground is that the school hired three buses to ferry pupils but one of the buses overturned.
“When we got to the scene, children were scattered everywhere. Many of them were very traumatised. They could not even talk. Those who were able to speak told us that the bus was speeding,” said Ndabandaba.
He said at the moment only five fatalities have been recorded but the final statistics will be shared once the bus is fully moved to see if no one is under the bus.
