A family from Emfihlweni Section in Tembisa, Ekurhuleni, is reeling in shock.

This comes after five people were injured when a gas cylinder exploded on Saturday, 2 September.

Precious Mokoena (50) said her sister, Nozipho Mbambo (54), is in ICU in a critical condition while her mother, Ouma Makofane (72), a neighbour, a tenant and her four-year-old son are in stable condition at the hospital.

She said they suspect the explosion was caused by a faulty gas bottle.

Precious said: "The condition of those who were injured is severe. They suffered burn wounds on their faces, hands and legs."

She said her mother has been using the gas cylinders for cooking.

“My sister Nozipho is asthmatic and she inhaled a lot of gas. That’s why she is being kept in ICU. Others are still in pain,” she said.

She said the house was damaged and needed a lot of renovations.

“My mother is a pensioner and lives with her tenants at her house. We appeal to anyone who can help with roofing and furniture,” she said.

Richard Sithole (40) said his landlord Ouma and her daughter Nozipho came home with the gas cylinders on Saturday, 2 September.

"Gogo Ouma lit the first gas cylinder and it was working. When they tried to light the second one, it was not working. I  checked the gas cylinder, and when I opened it we inhaled the gas smoke. I then left it and went out," he said.

It was during that time that the worst happened.

"While I was in my room I heard a loud bang and when I came out, I saw the house was on fire. We managed to rescue the five people in the house including a young boy who was badly burnt," he said.

He said neighbours used their cars to take them to the hospital.

"It was sad to see the five people in pain and burnt on their faces," he added.

A ward councillor, Lindiwe Mnguni, said they have to assess the damage but there is definitely a need to get help for the family.

She said the neighbours have been coming in to assist to clean the house.

She said: "The house needs to be renovated and I'll be asking for help from business people to ensure we assist the family. The owner of the house is a pensioner and it would be great if we could fix the house so when she comes back from the hospital, she can get the house in good condition,” she concluded.
