AT LEAST five people lost their lives when a VW Polo sedan crashed into a side of an articulated truck on the N4 toll road in Ngodwana outside Mbombela on Thursday, 11 August morning.

Mpumalanga Community Safety Security and Liaison spokesman Moeti Mmusi said:" The horrific accident happened when a VW Polo sedan crashed into the side of an articulated truck and the sedan overturned on the side of the road afterwards killing the five instantly. Thereafter, the Isuzu bakkie also crashed into the truck. The driver was slightly injured. The victims include a child and two women."

He said it is not yet clear as to what led to the collision, however, the investigation is already underway.

Mpumalanga Community Safety Security and Liaison MEC Vusi Shongwe, has extended his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and also wished the injured driver a speedy recovery and once more called on motorists to use the road with heightened alertness to avoid death and injury as a result of avoidable crashes.

"We are extending our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and also wishing the injured driver a speedy recovery. We should not be losing lives like this on our roads. Most of these crashes are avoidable and all that motorists need to do is to obey the rules and drive as cautiously as possible," he said.
