COPS arrested five suspects in the early hours of Friday after they were found in possession of unlicensed firearms at a guest house in Kensington, Joburg.
Captain Kay Makhubele said the Germiston flying squad and Springs public order policing received a tip-off about the armed men.
“The members went to the address, and were given permission to search the rooms. In one of them, five men were found in possession of six unlicensed firearms. Preliminary investigation revealed that the suspects had planned an armed robbery,” Makhubele said in a statement.

In a separate incident, Maitland flying squad arrested eight suspects shortly after a business robbery in Kraaifontein, Western Cape, on Thursday, 21 October.
Colonel Andrè Traut said the cops reacted to information after the suspects robbed a business of cellphones.
“An identified residential property was searched, where all suspects, aged between 25 and 45, were apprehended. An unlicensed firearm, ammunition, imitation firearm and 239 stolen cellphones were confiscated,” Traut said.
The suspects are expected to appear in court on Monday, 25 October.
