A FIRE gutted classrooms at Eden Park Secondary School in Eden near Thokoza, Ekurhuleni on Sunday, 21 August.
According to one of the parents, they were coming from church when they saw smoke coming from the school.
She said when they got closer, they realised that the classrooms were on fire.
“We called emergency services because we could not get into the school and put out the fire,” she said.
The parent said they believe the classrooms were burnt deliberately.
Another parent said: “I hope that the department will bring new mobile classrooms so that our children can continue to learn. We also want more security in the school.”
City of Joburg Emergency Services spokesman William Ntladi said they received a call at about 2pm that a school was on fire.
He said when they got to the scene, two classrooms were completely burnt down and three others were partially burnt. They managed to save three classrooms before the fire did more damage. He said the cause of the fire was still undetermined.
“There were no injuries or fatalities. After we put out the fire, the scene was handed over to the police for further investigation,” he said.
Gauteng Department of Education spokesman Steve Mabona said they were aware of incident. He said the cause of the fire is still unknown.
“It’s also reported that one of the classrooms was also broken into at the back of the school.
“The matter has been reported to the police and investigations are currently underway.
“The department has visited the school to provide the necessary support, and to ensure that teaching and learning is continuing,” he said.
